Nothing to do with badilex but if you've got a sweet tooth . . .
Quiz
A big thank you to everyone who came the AGM quiz and apologies from yours truly that we kicked off a little late owing to a technical hitch of the 'interface' variety (I didn't have the right wotsit to connect the laptop to the projector). All told we raised a creditable £300 for Julia's House which is excellent news.
the proposed increase in Branch Membership fees (the first for 5 years) was approved and as a result the renewal fees in February next year will be £10 for Fellows (currently £7.50), £7 for Members and Associates (currently £5.00) and £3 for Students (currently £2.50). Retired Fellows and Members will remain free.
Your new (although as she has served before perhaps not so new . . .) Chair is Sue Jones. Welcome back Sue and thanks to Andrew for his sterling service last year.
Your new Vice-Chair was elected in absentia but as I can find nothing in the rules prohibiting this it will still be me
Angela Jones kindly agreed to stay on as Treasurer and you're still stuck with me as Secretary.
2 new Committee members were elected, Sheelagh Brightman whom most of you will know from the College and Jo Vernon a student member of the branch. A very warm welcome to them both and we look forward to them shaking up us old timers.
On a sadder note, Mel Marvin resigned from the Committee owing to the pressure of other commitments. Mel had been on the Committee for many years serving as a fantastic Secretary for many of those. Her contribution will be sorely missed and we wish to thank for all her hard work over the years and wish her all the best (although she'd better keep in touch else there'll be trouble).
Ten Pin Bowling
Our next event will be the long awaited (well, long promised anyway) Ten Pin Bowling challenge which will take place on Thursday 26 April at Bowlplex, Branksome (we intend to start bowling at 7.30pm so try to be there a good 15 minutes beforehand to sort out shoes etc.). This is the bowling alley next to the Woodman on Poole Road and not Towerpark (as they had no room). For a map and other details, click here.
The full price is £11.99 per person for 2 games and a basket meal (see below for choices) however, if more than 15 go then that will reduce slightly (as we get a place free) and the branch will also subsidise this (to extent yet to be agreed) for branch members. Children are welcome and, as before, we will play a special game rather than focussing on getting a high score.
If you would like to come, please let me know as soon as possible (as I have to firm up the numbers) letting me know how many places you want and which of the following meals you and yours will want:
Revision Days
Looking further ahead, we intend, in conjunction with the College, to arrange some Level 6 revision days to take place, subject to demand, in May in the following subjects: Civil Litigation, Family Law, Family Practice and Contract. We intend to offer these free of charge and if you are interested in attending then please let me know now (identifying which subjects).
Annual Dinner
Looking even further ahead and for those of you have already booked the date I gave you before . . . Hold your horses! It is now almost certain that we will push the Dinner back a week to 14 December in order to hold it at a different venue. As the final arrangements are still being ironed out it is not 100% certain but it is 99% probable that the Dinner will be held at the Royal Bath Hotel instead of the Carrington House Hotel as we believe this venue will offer a better all round experience than was possible last year. I apologise for messing up your diaries but when I know for sure, you, the branch membership, will be the first to know as usual.
Situation Vacant
A vacancy exists for an experienced litigation secretary/assistant in a Poole firm. The successful applicant will need to have a sound knowledge of civil/personal injury litigation procedure, be an accurate audio typist and be able to deal directly with clients and others (primarily on the telephone) in what is an exceptionally busy but relaxed and friendly environment. For more information please contact me in the first instance (in complete confidence; I do not grass up anyone who approaches me nor do I pass on your details until you ask me to).
Pudding Night
This is nothing to do with badilex but is something organised by Mrs H (and so I have naturally 'volunteered' to help) which will take place on Saturday night, 12 May, at the Atlantic Bar in Parkstone Road. For £12, ticket holders will be served a small snacky starter followed by portions of about 9 different puddings. The purpose of the evening is to raise some funds for the Towerpark Youth Bowling Club but numbers are strictly limited so if this takes your fancy then please email jenny.hanningbtinternet.com ASAP.
